Quantitative studies on some mycobacterial phage-host systems.

چکیده
Within the last decade, several bacteriophages have been isolated (Gardner and Weiser, 1947; Whittaker, 1950; Hnatko, 1954; Froman et al., 1954) which possess lytic and virus-reproducing activity on saprophytic and pathogenic mycobacteria. Investigations of the mycobacteriophages (Hnatko, 1953; Froman et al., 1955; Hnatko, 1956) have largely dealt with phagetyping and mycobacterial classification. A survey of the literature has failed to reveal data which quantitatively define mycobacterial phage-host relationships. The recent discovery of phage D29 (Froman et al., 1954) made available a suitable phage-host system for such studies. The object of this study, therefore, is to present standard quantitative bacteriophage techniques to establish such undefined characteristics as adsorption behavior, latent period and burst size of the mycobacterium-phage system.

Emerging methods to study bacteriophage infection at the single-cell level
Bacteria and their viruses (phages) are abundant across diverse ecosystems and their interactions influence global biogeochemical cycles and incidence of disease. Problematically, both classical and metagenomic methods insufficiently assess the host specificity of phages and phage-host infection dynamics in nature. Here we review emerging methods to study phage-host interaction and infection dy...
متن کاملWhat Can Phages Tell Us about Host-Pathogen Coevolution?
The outcomes of host-parasite interactions depend on the coevolutionary forces acting upon them, but because every host-parasite relation is enmeshed in a web of biotic and abiotic interactions across a heterogeneous landscape, host-parasite coevolution has proven difficult to study. Simple laboratory phage-bacteria microcosms can ameliorate this difficulty by allowing controlled, well-replicat...
متن کاملEffect of Metal Ions and Chemical Solvents on the Adsorption of Salmonella Phage on Salmonella Choleraesuis Subspecies Indica Waman Narayan Paunikar*, Swapnil Ganesh Sanmukh and Tarun Kanti Ghosh
The effect of metal ions and chemical solvents on the adsorption of Salmonella phage isolated from sewage water on Salmonella choleraesuis subspecies indica showed how they interfere in the phage-host interaction process in the aquatic systems. Already the studies regarding the effect of metal ions had been done, but still the adsorption properties of different phages differ with ionic concentr...
متن کاملMycobacteriophage L 5 Integrase - Mediated Site - Specific Integration In Vitro MONG
Mycobacteriophage L5, a temperate phage of the mycobacteria, forms stable lysogens in Mycobacterium smegmatis via site-specific integration of the phage genome. Recombination occurs within specific phage and bacterial attachment sites and is catalyzed by the phage-encoded integrase protein in vivo. We describe here the overexpression and purification ofLS integrase and its ability to mediate in...
متن کاملComplete Genome Sequences of 63 Mycobacteriophages
Mycobacteriophages are viruses that infect mycobacterial hosts. The current collection of sequenced mycobacteriophages-all isolated on a single host strain, Mycobacterium smegmatis mc(2)155, reveals substantial genetic diversity. The complete genome sequences of 63 newly isolated mycobacteriophages expand the resolution of our understanding of phage diversity.
